Last December 6-7, Italian liberals from the ALDE group in the European Parliament organised the meeting 'Democracy Promotion: The European Way'.
IMD's director Roel von Meijenfeldt was invited to present a speech under the heading: 'Initiatives for institutional reform' and presented the audience with the outline of the proposal for a European Foundation for Democracy through Partnership in the precense of high-level Liberal and other Parliamentarians and invited partners.
The Dutch MEPs Jules Maaten and Janine Hennis-Plasschaert were present, as were ALDE-group leader Graham Watson, Emma Bonino, István Szent-Ivaányi, Annemie Neyts, Marco Pannella and Marco Cappato and Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner.
Under 'Downloads' you can find the draft-outcomes of this meeting, underlining the need for an 'effective democracy promotion mechanism' wich very much resembles the proposed foundation. The EFfDtP proposal was updated by Dr. Richard Youngs, who included all comments we received on the March 2006 version, please find the updated proposal under 'Downloads' in the menu your right hand.
